Designer Review ~ Danyel Pink Designs

I can’t believe it’s May already, how this year is flying by and this month brings another amazing designer! This month I’ll be featuring Danyel Pink Designs. With over 100 designs, there’s a pattern (or many) for everyone! Danyel, owner and designer, has a wide variety of patterns for every season. But not only designing, she’s also Editor-in-Chief of Happily Hooked Magazine… she’s quite the busy woman!

But now, let’s hear a little about Danyel!

How long have you been crocheting? What got you started?

My paternal grandmother taught me some crochet basics when I was about 10-11.  I made a few baby doll blankets at that time.  I didn’t start crocheting again until 2007, when I saw my mother-in-law working on a lovely afghan at her house.  She sent me home with a hook and a how-to book, and I started making hats and blankets for all my friends.

Where do you see your business going? Where would you like to be in 5 years?

I don’t have grand business plans.  I design a pattern when I’m feeling inspired.  In 5 years, I’d love to still be designing, and hopefully I’ll be able to publish a book someday.

Do you have any upcoming patterns you’d like to share with us?PrismSetB

I’m working on a pretty cool new hat in my “Kaleidoscope” series.  It can be made with any yarn or hook, so it’s going to be a fun stashbuster project for most people.

What is your favorite design and why?

I have 2, actually.  My “Memaw’s Favorite Hot Pad” is my favorite to make because it’s practical and quick to stitch.  My “Prism Slouch” is my favorite to look at because it’s so colorful and the texture is great!

What is your favorite item to make as a gift?

I give a Pencil Scarf to all of my kids’ teachers each year.  They’re not my favorite to MAKE… but they are my favorite to GIVE. 🙂

What is your favorite hook and why?

My I/9 Bates hook with the bamboo handle is definitely my go-to hook. I do have a nice collection of hooks with polymer clay handles that are so pretty, too!

Which crochet celebrity would you want to meet?

Well, I don’t know if we’ve obtained celebrity status yet, but I would LOVE to have a big “conference” with the Design Wars alumni.  I love those ladies (and gentleman!) so much, and although I haven’t met most of them in person, I definitely count them among my friends!

What celebrity would you like to see wearing your designs and why?DSC_0020

Um, any of them!  I’d even be happy to send a couple of baby hats to some of the TV networks… have you ever noticed that when babies wear hats on TV shows, that they’re those awful kufi beanies or little hats that don’t fit correctly?  That bugs the crap out of me!  Get those kids something CUTE!

What is your favorite color or color combination you like to work with?

Anything colorful.  I love variegated yarns, self-striping yarns, and all things rainbow!

sam mittens 3What is your least favorite thing to make?

Anything in pairs.  I definitely have a BAD case of “one sock syndrome”.  I probably shouldn’t admit this, but if you look at my photos of my Sam Mittens, it only shows one of each size because I never made the matching ones.  And if you look at my Mystic Mittens, my son is modeling them with his hands crossed because I never finished the thumb on the 2nd one.  I need help!  haha

Thank you, Danyel! Yes, kids should definitely be wearing cute hats… especially on TV! And I’m so much like you when it comes to making anything more than once. And I have a problem with weaving in ends but let’s not get started with that!

  1. Danyel I don’t like anything with pairs either! I have one slipper, one sock, one wristlet or mitten. Are those considered WIPS? Love your designs even if they are only half-way finished. ?
